Monumental Pair of Breton Oak Breakfront Cabinets, Late 19th Century (c. 1880)
An exceptional pair of monumental Breton breakfront cabinets, handcrafted in solid oak in Brittany, France during the late 19th century. These masterfully carved pieces are among the finest examples of regional French furniture, combining narrative carving, architectural form, and symbolic detailing.
Each cabinet features:
- A deeply carved cornice surmounting a central niche with spindled gallery and flanking columns
- Central cabinet door adorned with a stick-and-ball style roundel, set above two spindled galleries
- Below, a high-relief Breton peasant dining scene, flanked by columnar supports topped with fully carved Breton man and woman figures
- Lower cabinet doors with additional genre carvings of Breton village life, opening to interior shelving
- Side niches with spindle-backed shelves, supported by full figural carvings
- Two gryphon-carved drawers centered above lower cabinets
- The entire structure rests on a shaped plinth and bun feet
- Scarlet moiré fabric lining the interior of each spindled cabinet door
